5 Tips to Making the Transition from Classroom to Office

I recently began working here at BBR and have learned (under great leadership) how to best transition from being a student to being an employee. Graduating college can be pretty intimidating. We attend school for nearly our entire lives and then all of a sudden — WHAM — you are an adult and now have a new role to play. Here are 5 tips to keep in mind when making the transition from classroom to office:

TIP #1: Ask questions.

Your co-workers have all been in your shoes before. They do not expect you to know everything on your first day. Ask questions and consult with your immediate supervisor each day to ensure that you are performing your duties to the best of your ability.

TIP #2: Keep a to-do list.

On my first day of work, my eyes lit up as I saw my boss’ well-organized to-do list. She categorized her daily tasks with descriptions under each category preceded by boxes – some empty and some marked with a red  “x.”  She marks each task when she has fully completed everything that could possibly be done for it. This practice helps when reflecting on where your time goes at the end of each day.

TIP #3: Keep your desk organized.

Keeping your space organized is a common courtesy to your fellow employees and also a courtesy to your brain. You will function so much more easily if you keep those piles of paper to a minimum.

TIP #4: Think about your company’s big-picture goals.

Inquire about any big-picture goals that your company and department have. Make note of them and brainstorm little ways in which you can contribute to help your company/department reach its goals. Write a post-it note with these little things and if you ever have free time between tasks, knock them out and sleep well knowing that you have played your part.

TIP #5: Plan fun things to do after work.

It feels INCREDIBLE to not have to do homework anymore. Every now and then, you may have a work project to knock out at home, but I assure you that it will not be nearly as stressful as college homework. Take advantage of this “brain break” that you get every night. Join an intramural sports league, plan a weekly dinner with family and friends, go to the theater— the possibilities are endless.
